Definition
Artificial brain is term that is used to describe researches which has the main goal to improve the cognitive abilities of both software and hardware the same as with human and animal brains. Hence, this study aims to make software and hardware systems acquire the same capacity of human to think as well as the instinct of animals.
Possible Contribution to Science
Now, artificial brain indeed might possibly contribute large on science. First is that it is an unending attempt by neurologist, a special medical doctors who deals with disorder of nervous system, to better and fully understand the concept of human brain and how it really works. Neurologists use it for the purpose of understanding cognitive neuroscience, a scientific study of biological substrates and keep its attention of the neural substrates of mental processes. Cognitive neuroscience is a combination of branch of psychology and neuroscience. Next is that artificial brain is can give possibility that on today’s advance technology it is possible for scientist to create a machines which acquire general intelligent action commonly called as artificial intelligent. Hence, machines or robot can be intelligent all by itself and has the capability to think just as human beings. Finally, artificial brain is considered as long term and serious project which may lead scientist for future robotic generation.
Projects in Relation to It
There have been numerous project made even before to set as an example in achieving these objectives. Some of the projects related to this artificial brain was reported by Aston University in Birmingham, England in which researchers there are studying and experimenting biological cells so as to create tiny clusters of neurons called neurospheres as means of treating diseases such as Motor Neurone, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. This study can be related to the first objective which is to create possible solutions on disorders that are related to the brain or mind of human being.
Second possible contribution could answer all the point of view made by critics like for example John Searle, Hubert Dreyfus and Roger Penrose. In 1950, Alan Turing replied all the arguments made by these people wherein they believed that there are some aspects of human minds which is impossible to be simulated by robots or any machines. However, Turing replied such issue on his paper entitled Computing Machinery and Intelligence, wherein he stated that biological activities inside the brain can be replicated in different degree of accuracy.
Last possible contribution of artificial brain can achieve the last objective which is to create artificial general intelligence. It points out that there is a possible brain emulation using emulation computing machine so as to produce artificial brains. Predictions are made that this whole brain emulation can be done by the year 2025.
Issues
The creation of artificial brains has made much issues and controversy especially on the ethics of human being. Making artificial brain would create several moral questions like freedom, personhood and death. There is a need for explanations on such questions.
